The Halifax-Charlotte County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a Luminary Recognition Ceremony for Military Services at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the Halifax War Memorial on the corner of Main Street and Mountain Road, according to Red Cross Director Ginger Weaver.
“Everyone knows someone who is serving or has served our country in the armed services,” said Weaver. “You’re invited to recognize a special division, platoon, ship, airplane, battalion, unit or attachment.
“The Red Cross is waiting to hear from you with that kind of information to inscribe a luminary for the ceremony,” she added. “Help ‘light up the night’ in remembrance of those dedicated to protect our freedom.”
The public is invited to attend and enjoy this patriotic celebration with dignitaries, music, pomp and circumstance ending with hot apple cider and home-baked cookies served by Red Cross volunteers.
Orders can be mailed to P.O. Box 1774, Halifax, VA 24558, and they should specify “In Honor Of” or “In Memory Of” and include the name for the inscription and the name, address and telephone number of the requester.
“There is no charge for the luminary,” said Weaver.
“However, we will accept donations to further enable the chapter’s military services program, which provides national support to ensure that members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families receive timely and reliable emergency communications, case management services and access to emergency financial assistance through the military aid societies 24 hours a day, worldwide,” she concluded.
