Fire heavily damages South Boston house

An early morning fire heavily damaged a South Boston residence Wednesday, according to a South Boston Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters were called to the residence of Albert Medley, 103 E. Forest Trail, at 1:26 a.m. for a reported house fire, the spokesman said.

When they arrived on the scene firefighters found fire showing from the west side of the brick and siding house, he said.
South Boston Fire Department responded with three trucks and 14 firefighters. They were assisted with three trucks and nine firefighters from the Halifax Volunteer Fire Department.

Medley, who said he had a fire in a wood stove earlier that night, explained he was at home at the time of the fire but escaped unhurt.

The fire department spokesman said the cause of the fire has not been determined, and damages to the house were estimated at $40,000.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 3:31 a.m., the spokesman said.

The Red Cross is offering assistance.
