New CVS store on the way

Plans have been finalized for a new CVS Pharmacy to locate at the corner of Halifax Road (Route 501) and Old Halifax Road (Route 129) in Centerville, according to company officials.

“They closed on the property Thursday,” said George Lupton, commercial broker with Thalhimer Commercial Real Estate in Lynchburg. “The sale price was $1.9 million for approximately 1.79 acres.”

Lupton said the property CVS purchased includes the former site of American National Bank on the corner, the former site of Heritage House Furniture (previously Heilig-Meyers Furniture and Thornton Furniture) on Halifax Road and the former CPA office of Jim Irby on Old Halifax Road.

“They had to wait for the bank (American National) whose lease was up in September,” Lupton explained.

American National Bank recently moved to its new building on Old Halifax Road.

Lupton said CVS has plans to construct a 14,000+ sq. ft. store, complete with drive-thru and access from both Halifax Road and Old Halifax Road. The developer is Rebkee Co. from Richmond, he explained.

“It’ll be a good spot for them,” he said. “We originally looked at that site for Walgreens.”

South Boston Director of Public Works Alan Auld said the plans for the new store site and building have been approved.

“They’re in the process of getting building permits from the county,” he said.

Auld said the store building will be constructed by one of several regular contractors CVS uses to build its stores, but he said he understands one or more subcontractors will handle demolition of the current buildings, fill work and some other work at the building site.

“The first activity we’ll see there will be demolition,” he explained.

Dwight Waller, Halifax County building official, said they have been working on this project for almost a year and a half.

“The only thing lacking is the demolition permit,” Waller said. “Everything else is approved.”
