Thefts plague multiple counties

Eight people have been charged in connection with a suspected theft ring in North Carolina and Halifax County — and authorities said they expect more arrests. A task force was formed in April after numerous reports of burglaries, according to a news release from the Caswell County, N.C., Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s offices in Alamance, Person and Caswell counties joined the task force.

Those arrested were: Donald Lee Massey, Ricardo Lamont Johnson, Khalir Jamir Johnson, Whitney Dawntae Oliver, Timothy Lewis Lipscomb, James Wyatt Lipscomb, Vivian Lipscomb and Shaquan Henry Goza.

“This investigation is a good example of continued teamwork between law enforcement agencies that resulted in the arrests of individuals responsible for multiple break-ins across county and state lines,” said Caswell County Sheriff Michael Welch.

Task force investigators worked together to identify theft cases with similar patterns.

For example, a burglary in Halifax County where witnesses reported seeing a suspicious vehicle led investigators back to Caswell County on Sept. 29, according to the release.

The initial arrests of Timothy Lipscomb and Khalir Johnson led to recovered property and the subsequent arrests and charges.

Some of the charges date back to cases in 2009, the release stated. Items stolen in the suspected theft ring include firearms, TVs, jewelry, computers and video game systems.

Agencies involved in the investigation include the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office, Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, Burlington Police Department, Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Person County Sheriff’s Office and Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office — all in North Carolina.

In Virginia, the Danville Police Department, Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office and the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office joined in the probe.

Authorities are continuing the investigation and expect more arrests.
