Official: Speed a factor in deadly Halifax County crash

A 20-year-old Danville woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday morning in the western part of Halifax County, according to state police.

Helen S. Younger was pronounced dead at the scene after the 1989 Chevrolet Astro van she was driving crashed on Route 659 (Brooklyn Road), reported Trooper R. T. Ridgeway.

The trooper said the Astro van was traveling at an excessive rate of speed when it ran off the right side of the road. Younger overcorrected to the left, and the mini-van overturned several times partially ejecting Younger who was wearing her seatbelt, Ridgeway said.

A passenger in the vehicle, 22-year-old Latasha A. Coles, also of Danville, was injured and transported to Danville Regional Medical Center, the trooper reported. She also was wearing her seatbelt, he said.

The crash occurred at 10:35 a.m. on Route 659, eight-tenths of a mile west of Route 688.

Trooper Ridgeway estimated damage to the Astro van at $3,000.

Younger becomes the fourth fatality on Halifax County roads in 2010.
