South Boston man killed in head on crash Thursday evening

A 66-year-old South Boston man was killed Thursday evening in a head on crash on Old Cluster Springs Road in South Boston, and two others were seriously injured.

Bernice F. Link of Link Puryear Road was pronounced dead at Halifax Regional Hospital, and his 62-year-old wife, Linda L. Link, who was a passenger in the 1997 Chevrolet Malibu was airlifted to the Medical College of Virginia following the accident, according to an accident report filed by investigating State Trooper A. D. Dishman.

The accident occurred at 6:10 p.m. on Old Cluster Springs Road (State Route 704), 30 feet north of Oldfield Drive when a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer driven by 26-year-old Dianna L. Illa of South Boston ran off the road to the right, overcorrected and crossed the center line striking Link’s 1997 Chevrolet Malibu.

Illa was injured and transported to Halifax Regional Hospital, according to the report.

A passenger in Illa’s Mitsubishi, 42-year-old Christy L. Kerby was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.  She was flown to Duke Medical Center, the accident report stated.

Charges against Illa are pending, Dishman said.

Damage to the Mistubishi was listed at $7,500, and damage to the Malibu was listed at $6,000.
