Nathalie man killed in farming accident

A 73-year-old Nathalie man was killed yesterday as a result of a tractor accident that occurred at 1085 Joe Crews Trail, according to Halifax County Sheriff Stanley Noblin.

Gene Raymond “Baby” Crews of Lennig Road died at the scene from injuries sustained when he was struck in the head by a tree limb, Noblin said.

“A witness who saw what happened said Mr. Crews was bush hogging, and he was knocking down some tree limbs with the loader,” Noblin said. “One of the limbs came back and struck him in the head, knocking him off the tractor.”

EMS personnel from Liberty, North Halifax and Triangle volunteer fire departments were called to the scene at 10:33 a.m. but were unable to revive the unresponsive Crews, the sheriff said.

Sheriff’s Investigator T. R. Spencer was called to the scene at approximately 11 a.m., and Dr. Charles Devine, county medical examiner, pronounced Crews dead, Noblin said.

Funeral arrangements were not available as of press time Thursday afternoon.
