A Virginia State Police fire investigator is conducting an investigation into a Friday afternoon fire that destroyed a two-story frame house at 1045 Rogers Trail in the Cluster Springs community, according to Cluster Springs Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Robertson.
Shortly after 2 p.m., firefighters from Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department and South Boston Fire Department were called to a house fire at the residence of James and Barbara Parker.
The home was occupied, but no one was in the house at the time of the fire, the assistant fire chief said.
When firefighters arrived, the house was described as “fully involved with heavy smoke showing” and threatening another structure located behind the dwelling.
Additional manpower was requested, and Turbeville and Virgilina Volunteer Fire Departments were called to assist, Robertson said.
Officials with the Virginia Department of Forestry also responded to the fire when it threatened to burn nearby woods.
Cluster Springs VFD responded with three trucks and 12 firefighters, South Boston FD responded with two trucks and seven firefighters, Turbeville VFD responded with one truck and three firefighters, and Virgilina VFD responded with one truck and four firefighters, Robertson said, adding firefighters remained on the scene into the evening.
EMS workers also were called to the scene to check out the homeowner, according to reports.
The origin of the fire remains under investigation, Robertson said, and the Red Cross has been called in to assist the Parker family.
The two-story structure was declared a total loss, he added.
