The body of a 39-year-old Scottsburg man was recovered from Hyco Lake in Person County, N.C. shortly after noon on Monday, according to Person County Sheriff Dewey Jones.
James Canada was last seen by friends sitting on a sand bar island in shallow water a little after 4 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff said.
“No one saw him go under water,” Jones said noting the sheriff’s office received the call around 5 p.m.
“We searched the canal on the lake around Shore Drive,” he said noting the search was discontinued around 8:45 p.m. Sunday when it got dark.
The search resumed Monday morning around 8 a.m., Jones said, and Canada’s body was found shortly after noon in about eight to 10 feet of water some 20 to 30 yards from where he was last seen.
According to the sheriff, Canada’s family said he was unable to swim.
No foul play is suspected, Jones said, adding, Canada’s body was sent to the medical examiner’s office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.
