Habitat President Hangs Up His Hammer

Tri-River Habitat for Humanity Dane Skelton has resigned as president of the board of directors, a position he has held since 2005, it was announced this week.

In accepting his resignation, board members agreed Skelton has been a positive leader and said he will be immensely missed.

Skelton said his retirement from the board was based upon his decision to develop a “Youth Christian Fellowship” ministry, a vision Skelton has had for long time for Faith Community Church where he pastors.

While serving as president, Skelton said his goal for Tri River paralleled Habitat for Humanity International’s goal:  “To seek and eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make shelter a matter of conscience and action.”

Under his leadership, Tri-River Habitat for Humanity has made every effort to build one house per year in Halifax County.

When the goal of building one house per year was not obtainable due to a lack of funds, Tri-River has been blessed to acquire funds through fundraising events and donations to start a new house within a two-year period, he said.

Skelton managed and participated in several fundraising endeavors for Tri-River during his tenure  including “Ride for Home,” car washes, spaghetti dinners, silent auctions, “The Cancer Walk” and many others.

Tri-River will continue to organize fundraisers to build homes for the citizens of Halifax County.

Upcoming fundraising events that have been scheduled by Tri-River Habitat for Humanity include the following:

w VIR hosting a ride-around event on Sept. 11–13; and

w A county talent competition to be held at Halifax County High School on Oct. 23.

The prizes for the talent competition include $500 for the first place winner, $250 for second place, and $125 for third place.

The entry fee is only $25 to audition, and entry forms are due by Aug 31.

Tri-River extends an invitation to citizens of Halifax County to support its fundraising events.
