Halifax Farmers Market Ready For Grand Opening

Everyone is invited to the grand opening of the Halifax Farmers Market Saturday.

Located in the former Farmers Foods parking lot on South Main Street, the Farmers Market grand opening will take place Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.

Market days will be Friday from 9 a.m. until and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until, but association vendors are welcome six days a week.

Town Events Coordinator Erin Shaughnessy and Denise Barksdale with the Town of Halifax said they have been busy assisting the market in recruiting new vendors for the 2010 season, as well as signing up vendors from last year.

Shaughnessy is coordinating activities catering to children, families, producers of fresh produce, local farmers and those who enjoy gathering for live music, cooking demonstrations, artistic appreciation, environmental stewardship or those visiting with one another while helping to make the local economy thrive.

Saturday’s grand opening will feature live music by the Bluegrass 5 from 9 to 10 a.m. with special guests, the Halifax Hillbillies, to follow.

A grassroots plant and seed swap will be held, along with the Southside Master Gardeners Association-Halifax Botanical Garden display and the Dan River Basin Association display.

Door prizes will be given away by local businesses, along with live cooking demonstrations, kids activities, raffles and giveaways, Scottsburg Baptist Church Youth Group bake sale and local crafts available throughout the day.

The public is invited to support local farmers this season and buy from their selection of fresh herbs, flowers and vegetable plants, soaps and lotions, baked goods and fresh produce.

Fresh produce available Saturday includes Silver Queen corn, squash, zucchini, onions, new potatoes, cucumbers and homegrown tomatoes.

The permit fee for the entire 2010 season at the Halifax Farmers Market is $17.50, and checks should be made payable to the Halifax County Farmer’s Market Association.

Halifax Farmers Market is one of the contestants in the 2010 America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest hosted each year by American Farmland Trust. The online contest is a nationwide challenge to see which of America’s farmers markets can rally the most support from their communities.
