Police: Two Dead In Scottsburg Murder-Suicide

Two people are dead following an apparent murder-suicide Saturday afternoon in the Scottsburg community, according to Major T. E. Logan of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Logan said deputies were called to the parking lot of Short Stop at 1:19 p.m. “Sgt. D. H. Barksdale and Deputy J. M. Burton were the first officers on the scene,” Logan said. “When they arrived they found Wendy Diane Riley, 23, lying in the parking lot beside a pickup truck with an apparent shotgun blast to her middle torso. She was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The deputies also found David Michael Riley, 29, lying in the parking lot beside a blue sedan, the major said.

David Riley also had an apparent shotgun wound to the chest but was still breathing when officers arrived. He died a short time later at Halifax Regional Hospital, Logan said.

“This was an apparent domestic situation,” the major explained.

Both bodies were sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for autopsy, he said.

Sheriff’s Investigators T. R. Spencer and M. A. Womack are the investigating officers. Assisting at the scene Saturday were Virginia State Police, VSP Special Agent T. A. LaRue, officers with the South Boston Police Department, EMTs from the Scottsburg and Clover Volunteer Fire Departments and the Halifax County Rescue Squad.
