All roads lead to Halifax Saturday as the Halifax County Improvement Council, the Town of Halifax and the Convergence Art Guild present the “Halifax Earth Day Extravaganza.” This first annual event will be held at the Halifax Farmers Market, 209 South Main Street, in historic downtown Halifax from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and it has been designed to inspire, educate and to adjust the way we live to be more responsible as a community.
The day’s activities kick off at 8 a.m. with the beginning of the 5K run, followed at 8:30 with the Family Fun Run. Participants in the 5K run can begin registering at the Halifax Farmers Market at 7:15 a.m.
Activities are planned for all day, including demonstrations, displays and informational booths. The Master Gardeners will have tool sharpening, a rain barrel construction demo, a composting demo, crafts for the youngsters and hourly drawings. They also will have planting saplings provided by the U.S. Forestry Department, bean sprouting, coloring books and painting recycled flower pots.
The Convergence Art Guild will offer kids’ crafts throughout the day while members create a sculpture made of recycled items. At the guild, the Day of the Book will feature 40 local authors, and there will be face painting by Nelly.
The Halifax County Improvement Council will have kids crafts, VAST (Virginia Solar Technologies from Clarksville) will have a solar water heating demonstration. The Improvement Council also will have Adopt-a-Street sign ups and kids activities, including bean art, crating bird feeders from eggshells, and posters from the “Dare to be Clean, Dare to be Green” poster contest will be on display with winners announced during the day.
A number of members of the Halifax County Farmers Market Association will be on site promoting their crafts, plants, goods and produce.
Pick-a-Pine Plantation will have information on sustainable farming, farm fresh eggs for sale, and for the kids there will be a cow milking station.
The Town of Halifax will have information on recycling the right way, a silent auction inside the Farmers Market building from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. New and recycled items will be auctioned off to raise money for beautification and restoration activities in the Town of Halifax.
Carlbrook School will have solar oven demonstrations, Southern Virginia Botanical Gardens will have sign-ups, information and literature, and Spiritual Advisor Ami Hudson will have a spiritual look at environmentalism.
Kids will have the opportunity to fill planter boxes with compost, soil and plants. The planter boxes will be dedicated during a ceremony at 3:45 p.m.
Everybody’s favorite, Smokey the Bear, will be on hand to meet and greet the youngsters.
For entertainment, the Isadora Duncan Cultural Exchange dancers will perform at 10:30 a.m., and dancers from the We’ve Got Rhythm Dance Academy will perform at 1:30 p.m.
There will be music at noon with Dan Shaughnessy, Jackson Owen and Robbie Owen performing folk and reggae originals and covers. Sons of the Grove, Tim Knowlson and Dennis Dawson, will present a variety of songs from the 1930s, 40s and 50s on the electric guitar and mandolin beginning at 2 p.m.
Dan Thompson will be selling paintings, and there will be good things to eat, featuring Chris and Kaye’s Kitchen and Byler’s Homemade Ice Cream.
