Five Face Charges In Larceny

South Hill police have arrested five Halifax County residents in connection with a larceny of computers and computer-related equipment Monday from the South Hill Walmart store. South Boston residents Patrick Lackey, 21, Kevin L. Whitten, 30, Jason L. Jones, 27, Michael B. Vaughan, 32, and Clover resident Shannon T. Wilborn, 26, were each charged with felony grand larceny in connection with the  theft of merchandise totaling $2,889 from the South Hill store, according to South Hill Police Chief Norman Hudson.

The five fled the scene by car headed to North Carolina, but Mecklenburg County Deputy Rusty Gordon spotted the car and stopped them later when they reentered Mecklenburg County, Hudson said.

The South Hill Police Department is working jointly with the South Boston Police Department to determine if additional merchandise with a total value of $287 in the possession of the suspects at the time of their arrest matches the description of merchandise believed to be missing from the South Boston Walmart, Hudson added.

The chief said bond was set for each suspect, but he could not advise if any or all of the five suspects had made bond as of press time Tuesday.

In other law enforcement matters, Halifax County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating another recent break-in and larceny, according to Sheriff Stanley Noblin.

Someone entered the Bethel Road home of Reuben Clowdis in Scottsburg sometime over the past few weeks and stole a white Century brand lockbox containing an undisclosed amount of cash, Noblin said. Deputies have not determined how the home was entered, the sheriff added.
