Sunshine Mills in Halifax laid off an unconfirmed number of employees Thursday morning, according to Royal Witcher, chief operations officer in the plant’s corporate office headquartered in Red Bay, Alabama. When questioned about the exact number of employees affected by the layoffs, Witcher said he had “no comment.”
However, the chief operations officer did confirm layoffs occurred at the Halifax plant last week.
“I can confirm that a reduction in force did take place,” Witcher said.
In a telephone interview Friday, Witcher said he had “no comment” on the reason for the layoffs but did state the Halifax plant currently is the only Sunshine Mills plant affected by the layoffs.
When contacted by phone Friday, Halifax Plant Manager Chad Drew said he had “no comment” on the plant layoffs.
In addition to the plant in Halifax, Sunshine Mills has a marketing, packaging and quality assurance plant located in Red Bay and manufacturing plants in Red Bay and Tupelo, Mississippi providing a complete line of innovative pet food products and treats to distributors and retailers throughout the world, according to its Web site.
