Halifax Woman Pleads Guilty To Conspiracy, Child Abuse Charges

A 35-year-old Halifax woman pleaded guilty Monday in Halifax County Circuit Court to three felonies after entering into a plea agreement with the Commonwealth. Joynita Marie Smith pleaded guilty to child abuse with serious injury, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery.

Pursuant to the plea agreement, three charges against the defendant were nol prossed, including conspiracy to commit sodomy, rape by force or threat and forcible sodomy.

The court sentenced Smith to 10 years each in prison for child abuse and obstruction of justice, with all but two years suspended based on the obstruction of justice charge.

The court sentenced Smith to a five-year suspended sentence for the conspiracy conviction, with the suspended portion of Smith’s entire sentence conditioned on her good behavior for 25 years.

The court also ordered the defendant placed on probation for one year following her release.
