Police: Armed Robber Hits Jiffy

A man robbed the Jiffy Store, located on John Randolph Boulevard in South Boston, at gunpoint Tuesday night, according to South Boston Police Investigator C. L. Carswell.

Clerks at the store reported to Officer T. W. Bush a black male dressed in black entered the store around 9:45 p.m., brandished a handgun and demanded money, Carswell said.

The man, whose face was concealed by a black stocking mask, left on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, the investigator added.

Halifax County Sheriff’s deputies and troopers from the Virginia State Police responded to the scene to assist in the search for the armed man. A tracking dog also was called to assist in the search but could not locate the suspect, Carswell said.

Anyone with information about this robbery is asked to contact the South Boston Police Department at 575-4273 or Crime Stoppers at 476-8445. Calling Crime Stoppers can lead to a reward of up to $1,000 for the arrest and conviction of offenders, Carswell said.

w In other law enforcement matters, Halifax County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a break-in at a residence on Mountain Road in Halifax, according to Sheriff Stanley Noblin.

Curtis Fitzgerald reported someone broke into his home sometime between 11:30 p.m. Monday and 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Noblin said. The intruder gained entry into the home by prying open the back door, he added.

The thief stole two jars containing an undetermined amount of change, the sheriff said.

Deputy J. O. Tanner is investigating.

John Stevens of Tobacco Road, Nathalie reported someone stole a gas tank and some tools from a jon boat parked beneath a shed on his property, Noblin said. The theft occurred sometime over the past month, he added.

Deputy J. M. Burton is the investigating officer.

Paterno Dimaano, general manager at Clayton Homes of South Boston, reported sometime during the past two weeks a vandal struck a mobile home belonging to the company located on Chestnut Creek Road, Halifax, Sheriff Noblin said. A window and a kitchen sink were damaged, he added.

Investigator M. A. Womack is investigating.

• A 29-year-old South Boston man is facing three felony charges, according to sheriff’s office records.

David Shelton Holt of Cherry Hill Church Road was charged with two felony counts of grand larceny of more than $200 and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The offenses allegedly occurred March 19, and Deputy Tanner served the warrants Monday.

• Danta O’Brien Clardy, 18, Williams Trail, Halifax, was charged with felony grand larceny of more than $200 and felony burglary-entering a dwelling house with intent to commit larceny, assault and battery or other felony.

The offenses allegedly occurred Jan. 16, and Deputy Tanner served the warrants Monday.

•  Crystal Pulliam Moorefield, 32, Cow Road, Buffalo Junction, was charged with felony writing a bad check of $200 or more.

The offense allegedly occurred Aug. 20, and the warrant was served Monday by another law enforcement agency.

• Kenneth Roosevelt Woodson, 46, Mussel White Drive, Waverly, was charged with felony extortion.

The offense allegedly occurred Feb. 27, and another law enforcement agency served the warrant Tuesday.

•  Jesse Ray Traynham Jr., 20, Hundley Road, Scottsburg, was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery of a family or household member.

The offense allegedly occurred Sunday, and Deputy Tanner served the warrant Monday.

• McKenzie Stevens, 19, E. Hitesburg Road, Virgilina, was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery.

The offense allegedly occurred March 9, and Major T. E. Logan served the warrant Monday.

• Matthew Paul Sims, 40, Hughes Road, Alton, was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery of a family or household member.

The offense allegedly occurred March 18, and Cpl. C. S. Yeatts served the warrant Wednesday.

• Wistar Allen Stevens, 45, Oak Level Road, Halifax, was charged with misdemeanor violating the terms of a juvenile protective order.

The offense allegedly occurred Saturday, and another law enforcement agency served the warrant Wednesday.

• Jarrid Michael Puryear, 27, Bethel Road, Halifax, was served a capias alleging he violated the conditions of his probation on a felony charge.

Cpl. P. C. Clayton served the capias Tuesday.

• Timothy T. Austin Jr., 20, Clays Mill Road, Halifax, was served a capias alleging he violated the conditions of his probation on a felony charge.

Cpl. Clayton served the capias Tuesday.

• Jerry Louis Barksdale, 47, Union Grove Road, South Boston, was served a capias alleging he violated the conditions of his probation on a felony charge.

Deputy J. P. Adams served the capias Wednesday.

• Roscoe Waller Jr., 41, Lusardi Drive, Brookneal, was charged with misdemeanor contempt of court.

Deputy Adams served the warrant Tuesday.

• Carlton Ray Mitchell Jr., 32, Wilson Memorial Trail, Vernon Hill, was charged with misdemeanor contempt of court.

The offense allegedly occurred March 8, and another law enforcement agency served the capias Wednesday.
