The ground and air search for a missing Scottsburg man ended tragically Sunday morning when searchers found the body of 53-year-old Leroy Anderson, according to Halifax County Sheriff Stanley Noblin.
Anderson’s body was found at 10:15 a.m. Sunday in a wooded area near a trail approximately one mile from his residence, Noblin said.
Search and rescue personnel had been looking for Anderson since he went missing Tuesday afternoon, the sheriff said. Approximately 50 searchers and search dogs, along with the State Police helicopter, participated in the search for Anderson, he added.
Margaret Bailey, Anderson’s fiancée, of 4169 Macdonald Road, Scottsburg reported Anderson had left their residence walking at approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday and never returned, Noblin said.
Anderson reportedly had medical complications, and he did not have his medication with him when he disappeared Tuesday afternoon, the sheriff said.
It appeared that Anderson died from natural causes, Noblin said Sunday, but the body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for autopsy.
Agencies participating in the search for Anderson included the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, MED-FLIGHT 3, ANGEL Search and Rescue, Halifax County Search and Rescue and the Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department.
Sheriff Noblin expressed his appreciation to all who participated in the search activities.
