The Prizery arts center was officially awarded the first-ever Rising Star Award in front of about 300 of its peer organizations at the annual Art Works for Virginia conference last week in Richmond.
The Virginians for the Arts honor was given to the organization showing the most promise in making a significant impact on its community. Among the honorable mentions was Parsons-Bruce Art Association.
The Shining Star Award for longer-established groups went to the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, which was founded during the Great Depression. More than 80 arts groups around the state applied for the honors.
The three-day annual conference featured speakers, seminars and networking opportunities. The Prizery is supported by the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
Representing Halifax County’s winners were Chris Jones, John Fulton, Bob Mares, Peggy Crews, Carol Foster, Judy Green, Boo Evans, Barbara Speece and Eva Cassada.
