Suspect Charged With 17 Counts In Probe Of Break-Ins

A 28-year-old South Boston man has been arrested and charged in a rash of recent break-ins that plagued the southern end of the county in November, according to Investigator J. D. Clay of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Antione Jarrod Scott of Ponderosa Road was charged Friday by Investigator Mike Womack on 17 counts related to eight different break-ins in the Hyco Road community and surrounding areas.

Scott faces eight charges of breaking and entering, two misdemeanor counts of destruction of property and seven charges of grand larceny, Clay said.
Eight break-ins – six occurring in the day and two at night – were reported at the following residences:

• Linda Howerton on Nov. 19;

• Gayle Elliott between Nov. 24-25;

• Michael Moorefield on Nov. 30;

• Barbara Howerton between Oct. 25 and Nov. 15;

• Barbara Jackson on Nov. 19;

• Jean Owen between Nov. 20-21;

• Beverly Hicks on Nov. 19; and

• John Chappell between Nov. 30 to Dec. 1.

Investigator Clay said the sheriff’s department collected evidence at the scenes of the break-ins and grand larcenies and followed up on tips from people in the community that led to the arrest of Scott.

Sheriff Stanley Noblin expressed appreciation to everyone in the community who provided information on these break-ins.

Last month, South Boston Police Department arrested Scott on charges related to a break-in that occurred at a Halifax Road home Dec. 1.

South Boston authorities also charged Scott last month with breaking and entering and grand larceny for a burglary that occurred Nov. 25 on Forest Drive.

Assisted by the South Boston Police Department, Clay said the county sheriff’s office investigative unit had been tracking the rash of break-ins that occurred Oct. 25 through Dec. 1.

Authorities have recovered some of the property taken in the break-ins, he added.

“We are still following up on other leads and anticipate more arrests,” Clay said.

Anyone with additional information pertaining to these or other break-ins is asked to contact the investigative division of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office or call the Halifax County Crime Line at 476-8445. Persons can remain anonymous, Clay said.

Scott is being held in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail.

•  In other police reports, Halifax Police Officer A. D. Tribble investigated a burglary Wednesday that occurred at 1020 Cowford Road.

According to Tribble’s police report, the burglary took place on Tuesday between 4 and 5:30 p.m. after entry was gained by damaging the front door and lock.

Lt. David Irby reported a pink 16-speed girl’s bicycle with purple paint flakes valued at $200, one bottle of Diovan, 160 mg, valued at $88, a pink trinket box, several insulin needles and an undisclosed amount of cash were taken in the break-in.

Anyone with information regarding this burglary is asked to call the Halifax Police Department at 476-2526 or the Halifax County Crime Line at 476-8445.
If the tip results in an arrest and conviction, persons may receive a cash reward, Irby said.
