School Board To Reorganize At Tonight’s Meeting At 7

The new-look Halifax County School Board will reorganize for the year when it meets tonight at 7 o’clock in the public meeting room of the Mary Bethune Office Complex in Halifax. The board will welcome its three new members: Karen G. Hopkins (ED2), Kimberly T. Farson (ED3) and Fay Satterfield (ED6).

The board will elect a chairman and vice-chairman and will appoint a clerk and deputy clerk and a designee to attend school board meetings in the absence of the superintendent.

Superintendent Paul Stapleton will discuss proposed school board meeting dates and will request board members to sign the VSBA Code of Ethics for School Board Members.

The new board chairman is expected to discuss the 2010 VSBA Orientation for School Board Chairs/Vice-Chairs or New Board Members/Superintendents. The new chairman also is scheduled to address the 2010 VSBA Legislative Conference set for Feb. 18-19.

Under new business, Superintendent Stapleton is expected to discuss the joint meeting with the board of supervisors during the supervisors’ retreat scheduled for Feb. 11 or 12 at Riverstone.

Chief Finance Officer Bill Covington is slated to report on the school system’s finances. Prior to adjourning the board is expected to go into executive session to address student discipline issues.
