Halifax County High School Academic Competition of Excellence (ACE) varsity team members aced the competition and brought home the victory from the district ACE tournament held at Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke on Monday evening.
The ACE team placed first in the district tournament and completed the season with a second place finish qualifying them to compete in the northwest regional tournament to be held Saturday, Feb. 6, in Woodbridge.
Commenting on their regular season and tournament victory, Coach Beth Layne said, “I think the sportshamship displayed by all four schools – Halifax, William Fleming, Patrick Henry and George Washington – was wonderful.
“I am so proud of all of these young people. I think they represent the best of Halifax County. We can hold our own against students in larger cities. They amaze me with the depth of their knowledge and enjoyment of learning,” she added.
Coach Laura Meeks said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with such a bright group of young people. It is invigorating to see these students so committed to learning.”
ACE team members offered the following comments on the season and their district tournament win.
Travis Collier: “I believe that the matches went well because of prior practices and preparation which was important. I love ACE.”
Tony Landrum: “The excellent preparation of the ACE coaches allowed us to defeat GW, William Fleming and Patrick Henry.”
Elizabeth Leggett: “I was overjoyed that we beat Patrick Henry because they have been our main rival this season. We routed them once, but the rest of the time, we played them really close.”
Holly Duffer: “I was really nervous when we were playing GW. They beat us in the first round, but I had to try to remain neutral because I was the time keeper.”
Graham Bryant: “Our team has always worked well together, and we truly hit our stride at the tournament. We are one of the more diverse teams. We have a good mixture of males and females. We all contribute and complement each other. For the most part, we all get along really well.”
Dylan Lowery: “I have been on the ACE team for five years and seeing us win is truly a wonderful thing to experience especially because it is my senior year.”
Julia Simon: “I am really going to miss ACE. Being on this team provides an environment where it is not only okay to be smart, it is a badge of honor. The people on this team are so smart in so many different ways. It is a privilege to count myself among such an intelligent group of people.”
Sid Patel:” This was my first year on the ACE team. It has been a great experience. It was a joy to work with such honorable people.”
