Local Girl To Serve As Virginia Senate Page

Sophie Crowell has been nominated and selected to serve as a Virginia Senate page for the 5th Congressional District during the 2010 session of the General Assembly.

Nominated by eighth-grade guidance counselor Barbara Womack, Crowell is one of 11 pages selected in the state and will be working with the Virginia senators and senate clerk’s office in Richmond beginning Jan. 10 through March 13.

Her duties will include assisting senators and committee clerks collating bills and preparing daily calendar bill books.

“I am very excited to be selected as a senate page and the opportunity to represent my class, my school and Southside Virginia,” she wrote.

In addition to working as a page, Crowell will report back to her classmates about the daily business of the state government and her observations of the state’s law-making process.

Crowell also is currently an officer in the HCMS SCA, has been inducted into the National Junior Honor Society, is a member of the Lions’ Roar newspaper staff and is taking extra-curricular courses at DCC and UNC-Chapel Hill.
