Members of the North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department were joined by representatives from Halifax Regional Health System and Centra Health of Lynchburg to celebrate the department’s new helipad with a groundbreaking ceremony Friday.
The 50’x50’ lighted pad will be located on the southwest side of the department’s property and will be able to serve medivac helicopters of virtually any size that are needed in the area.
According to department officials, the pad has been in the making for several years and is now becoming a reality with the support of the two area hospitals.
Contractor Mac McDannald said he expects the helipad to be completed in approximately 30 days with weather permitting.
Department members said the new helipad will improve the safety of the loading of patients and will make the flights more efficient because volunteers will no longer be called away from the scene of a fire or wreck to establish a landing zone for the medivac helicopter.
The new helipad will be the second in the county. There is one located in South Boston.
