SoBo budget: Department heads plead for funding

It wasn’t so much about wants but needs when South Boston Town Council’s Finance Committee met Monday in council chambers to receive budget requests from a number of department heads.

For Lt. D. H. Barksdale, a K-9 handler at the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, his dog, Diego, is more than just a work dog — he’s a friend and member of the Barksdale family. “Diego is my buddy. He’s my partner. He is a family pet,” Barksdale said. Barksdale has had the 5-year-old Dutch Shepherd since 2011, and man’s best friend already was trained when the sheriff’s office purchased him.

Halifax tourism wins two awards

Growth of tourism in Halifax County was recognized over the weekend when the Department of Tourism received two awards, Visitor Center of the Year and Heritage Tourism for the Heritage and Antique Machinery Festival, both presented by the Virginia Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus (VACVB).
