Small animal processing facility eyed for county

Halifax County Supervisors unanimously approved moving ahead with a planning grant to explore the feasibility of developing a small-scale animal  processing center in the county during their Monday night meeting.

Big crowd turns out for Bland Contest

Before an almost standing-room-only crowd, 17-year-old harpist Katherine Elizabeth Campbell of Danville’s George Washington High School and Caleb Anthony Flowers, a 15-year-old home-schooled countertenor from Clover, each took home $300 after winning the South  Boston Lions Club’s Annual James Bland Memorial Music Contest Friday night at The Prizery.

Halifax Poetry Out Loud winners advance to state

This week, all three of Halifax County High School’s Poetry Out Loud winners advanced to the state competition to be held in Richmond next month.  

3 Women, No Truck under new ownership

Women, No Truck, a store specializing in consignment furniture and home decor located in Downtown South Boston, is now under new ownership. Andy Newland became the sole owner of the store last April.

Jobless rate remains same for third straight month

For the third straight month, the jobs outlook in Halifax County remained the same in December, holding its own at 8.7 percent, the same as reported in October and November, according to the latest Virginia Employment Commission data released Tuesday.

American National Bankshares reports fourth quarter earnings

American National Bankshares Inc., parent company of American National Bank and Trust Company, Friday announced fourth quarter 2012 net income available to common shareholders of $3,918,000 compared to $4,600,000 for the fourth quarter of 2011, a $682,000 or 14.8 percent decrease.
