First ‘authentic’ Crossing of the Dan reenactment set Feb. 22

Long before the modern concrete bridge for vehicle traffic crossed the river from Route 58 into South Boston, or even before a railroad bridge crossed the Dan River at the site of the town, there was a ferry.  Boyd’s Ferry and also Irwin’s Ferry, four miles westward, took passengers, wagons and cargo across on a regular basis.

American Legion Post 8, South Boston … Sons of the American Legion will host a Valentine Dance Feb. 15 with Pizazz, 9 p.m.-1 a.m. $15 advance, $20 at door. Only 200 tickets will be sold.

Benchmark Community Bank welcomes new loan specialist

Benchmark Community Bank on Thursday announced that Janice Puleo has joined the bank as a vice president and loan specialist concentrating on agricultural lending.  In this role, she will reach out to agricultural businesses and producers in Southside Virginia and help them with their financial needs. 

Halifax Farmers Market gears up for season

The Town of Halifax Farmers Market held its annual vendor meeting Jan. 30 at Halifax Town Hall. Items of discussion included the continued success and growth of the farmers market along with upcoming events that will be hosted by the farmers market this season. 

High school to perform free play

The Halifax County High School Theatre Department will be performing their competition play, “A Piece of My Heart” on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. The play by Shirley Lauro is the story of army nurses during the Viet Nam War and their lives after returning home. The competition piece is a cutting of the full-length play that the school performed 12 years ago.
