Free concert set at First Baptist

The combined choir will present a free concert “Then Sings my Soul” Sunday at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church on North Main Street in South Boston.

The combined choir is comprised of singers from First Baptist, First Presbyterian, Main Street United Methodist, Ash Avenue Baptist, Dan River Baptist, Hunting Creek Baptist, County Line Baptist, Winn’s Creek Baptist, Childrey Baptist and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church choirs and soloist Rebecca Whitlow.

In 2011 a combined choir formed comprised mostly of choirs from First Baptist, Main Street United Methodist, First Presbyterian and Ash Avenue choirs and performed a musical for the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

These churches generally join together for such events as the Community Thanksgiving Service and Easter Sunrise Service, according to Susan Davis, minister of music at First Baptist Church

The musical program consists of a group of spirituals, a group of hymn arrangements and a group of contemporary pieces.   There is even a sing-a-long that will involve audience participation, she added.

“I sincerely hope that people attending will have a worshipful experience.   We are not doing this strictly for entertainment purposes, but rather to lift up our voices together to worship God.   We have had such a great time practicing together this summer, and I want those in attendance to have a good time as well, but mainly to have a worshipful experience,” Davis said.

Rebecca Whitlow will sing solos in two of the songs as well as sing a selection or two on her own.

“I am excited that she agreed to  ‘come home’ for this.  She has a remarkable voice, and she will be a phenomenal addition to the program,” Davis said.

Pastor Dave Anderson encourages the public to take advantage of “this wonderfully spiritual, music opportunity.”

He said, “Imagine an enthusiastic choir composed of talented and dedicated individuals from various community congregations, lifting unified voices in praise to God.  Come be inspired by this community endeavor, and may we experience together a cooperative sense of worship, as a truly unified family of faith. First Baptist Church looks forward to hosting this event, to the glory of God,” the pastor said.
