Staunton River State Park, in Halifax County, will host a Star Party March 7-10.
This is the fourth Staunton River Star Party sponsored by the Chapel Hill Astronomical and Observational Society (CHAOS).
The $35 registration fee includes admission to the star party and camping in the observation area. Registration information is available at www.chaosastro.com/starparty.
On Saturday a free public viewing program will be held from 8 to 11 p.m.
“This event is becoming a premier star party on the east coast for all observers, from those that are new to observing to experts, and we look forward to sharing our dark skies with everyone,” said acting Park Manager Adam Layman.
Registered participants will be able to set up and camp near their equipment in either tents or RVs.
On Saturday night there will be presentations as well as viewing stations set up to see major planets (Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) and many other stars.
Visitors are advised to dress warmly, as weather is likely to be cool this time of year. The event will depend on clear skies for viewing. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the park’s pool concession area.
