Approximately 100 people attended a wreath laying ceremony Saturday at Virgilina Cemetery led by Payne Atkins Nunn, a sophomore at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham.
Nunn completed his Eagle Scout requirements Saturday with the conclusion of the wreath laying ceremony.
During the ceremony, wreaths were laid in remembrance of those who served in the United States Army, United States Marine Corps, United States Navy, United States Air Force, United States Coast Guard, United States Merchant Marines and the 93,129 United States Servicemen from all branches of the service whose last known status was either Prisoners of War or Missing In Action.
American Legion Post 8 gave a gun salute, and Taps was performed after Virgilina Mayor Ralph Murray, Wayne Bowen, Donald Chandler, Lottie Nunn and Fannie Tuck read the names of the veterans.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Nunn invited all attending to lay a wreath on each veteran’s gravesite that was marked with an American flag.
