SVHEC offers illustration course

Starting Sept. 25, award-winning illustrator and author Ron Miller will offer The Storyteller: The Art of Illustration at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center. The course will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. for four weeks.

The Storyteller is an introductory course in creating art for books, magazines, advertising and other media. Students will be given design challenges and will have to decide on the best way to solve the design problem.

Miller will use his vast knowledge and work experience to offer critiques and guidance on student work.

“How you solve the challenge it is up to you,” Miller said. “You can paint, draw, do it digitally. . . it doesn’t matter. What matters is how well you answer the problem. If you’re designing a book cover what matters is if the solution works as a book cover or not. The class will be like real life,” he continued.

According to Miller the class is ideal for anyone serious about becoming an illustrator or artist. The class will not feature instruction on how to draw, paint or use a computer. Instead, the course will allow those interested in illustration to hone their skills and begin to think more like a working artist. Student material will be judged on how well it works in answering the design challenge.

Miller is a celebrated illustrator and author specializing in science, astronomy, science fiction and fantasy. He has designed a number of book and magazine covers including the cover of Discovery Magazine. In addition, he is the author, co-author or editor of more than 50 books including several novels.

Miller has designed postage stamps and worked as a production designer and special effects artist on several motion pictures.

Online registration for The Storyteller: The Art of Illustration is available at http://registration.svhed.org. The registration fee is $75.
