South Boston Alzheimer’s Support Walk set Sept. 13

Pull out those walking shoes and prepare to get some exercise for a good cause.

The South Boston Alzheimer’s Support Walk is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Woodview. Registration begins at 5 p.m. with walkers taking off at 5:30.

Funds raised during this event will be donated to the Southeastern Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association to help support the work done locally to serve those individuals and their families who are facing the challengers of the disease.

Here are the facts: 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. One in eight older Americans has Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States and the only cause of death among the top ten that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. Nearly half of the people age eighty-five and older have it. Nearly 200,000 individuals under the age of 65 are facing the challenges of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. You can help.

Gather together your family and friends, collect money for the cause and, most importantly, walk to show your support for those facing the difficult task of navigating the puzzle that is this unrelenting illness. The money raised is used to support a variety of Alzheimer-related programs such as family orientations, the 24 hour helpline, educational seminars and training workshops for both family and professional caregivers, the Safe Return program, the local support group and the speakers bureau, all of which assist individuals and families struggling with the disease.

Alzheimer’s Support Walk chair Dawn Emerson is looking forward the upcoming event.

“Each year our walk grows,” she said. “As more and more people are touched by the disease, there is more and more interest in helping to do something about it.”

Anyone wishing to form a team or walk as an individual is welcome. “It’s always a fun event,” Emerson said. “We have several walking routes planned so walkers can choose how energetic they want to be. We serve refreshments and give away door prizes. We are very fortunate to have great support from The Woodview, Seasons at The Woodview, Halifax Regional Health System as well as the community. We welcome all walkers.”
