Two months ago Halifax County South Boston Library System personnel started brainstorming ideas for a new program, the library outreach program.
Library Director Jay Stephens mailed out letters asking assisted living facilities if they would like to house books from the library.
Since then Stephens has delivered two sets of 40 fiction and nonfiction, large print books to Commonwealth Assisted Living Home of South Boston and to the Chastain Home in Halifax.
These new books are being added to the assisted living homes’ current book collections. The books have a two-month checkout time, and when those two months are up Stephens will return with a new set of books.
Residents also can make requests for certain books or authors, and Stephens said if they library has the book requested he will get them to the homes.
Books on CD also are available for request.
“We want to extend library services to those who can’t come to us,” said Stephens.
