Ribbon cut officially opening Family Dollar in Virgilina

Dozens gathered outside the Family Dollar Store in Virgilina on Saturday morning to be one of the first 50 customers to receive a $5 gift card and other goodies in celebration of the store’s grand opening.

Customers also received coupon bags provided by Pepsi and free samples of Tide Pods and Gain Fireworks. A Monster T-shirt, a sleeping bag and a collectible train set provided by Coca-Cola also were given away.

Coupons offering $5 off for purchases over $25 also were given away to customers.

According to Store Manager Tracy Hutson, the store located at the corner of Seventh Street and Florence Avenue opened the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and Saturday was its official grand opening.

A ribbon cutting was held at 9 a.m., and Virgilina Mayor Ralph Murray cut the ribbon.

The store currently has six employees including Hutson, and Cecily Newton and Shannon Bagbey each serve as assistant managers.

The store is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week offering a variety of items such as groceries, clothes, home goods, car products, electronics, toys, beauty supplies, personal hygiene products and more.

“It’s going to save a lot of travel time. Everybody is so happy that we’re here, and they don’t have to go 30 miles to get what they need,” Hutson said.

She said prices are competitive to Walmart’s prices, and the store carries both name brands and store brands.

Hutson said business has been great since they have been opened.

“I’m very glad we’re here, and all the Virgilina natives have been wonderful people. I just hope business continues to do like it is,” she added.
