Training approval benefits jobless

The South Central Workforce Investment Board has approved the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center as a training provider for the Work Ready Foundations, a new short-term work readiness initiative. With this approval, eligible unemployed clients who enroll in Work Ready Foundations will have their tuition and fees paid for with Workforce Investment Act funds.

According to Debra Crowder, executive director of the South Central Workforce Investment Board, “The addition of a short term training program that meets the needs of our local employers will be an asset to local citizens looking for jobs. The Work Ready Foundations initiative will prepare jobseekers to enter the advanced manufacturing career pathway.”

Work Ready Foundations, a new training program developed by the Workforce Services staff at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, prepares individuals for success in entry-level advanced manufacturing positions. This short-term training program was developed at the request of local employers and has been endorsed by the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce’s Senior Executive Round Table. Throughout the six to eight-week training program, participants will learn technical and soft skills needed to be successful in today’s manufacturing and industrial workplaces.

Sandra Conner, Workforce Services@SVHEC program coordinator, is the primary point of contact for the Work Ready Foundations program.

Director of Workforce Services@SVHEC, Dr. Nettie Simon-Owens considers this initiative “a spin-off of a much larger comprehensive training project with a local employer that involves multiple training providers working together to meet the needs of area employers. Employers told us what they need in entry-level employees and the Work Ready Foundations program reflects their voices and needs. This program is replicable across the commonwealth.”

Workforce Services@SVHEC is now recruiting participants for the first Work Ready Foundations class. Spaces are extremely limited.
