The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center invites the community to Open House 2013 on Sunday, April 21, from 2-5 p.m. The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center’s main building and the SVHEC-Innovation Center will be open for tours, live demonstrations and information sessions.
SVHEC educational partners will be present to share information about programs, financial aid and scholarships. Light refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be given away during this fun-filled afternoon.
The theme of the open house is “Get Career and Job Ready Right in Your Own Backyard.” The afternoon will feature information sessions on the jobs predicted to grow in Southern Virginia. In addition, representatives from Averett University, Danville Community College, ECPI University, GENEDGE Alliance, James Madison University (non-credit program), Mary Baldwin College, Old Dominion University, Virginia Technical Institute, Virginia Manufacturers Association, and Workforce Services@SVHEC will share information on the programs available to prepare individuals for careers in growth areas.
Other Southern Virginia Higher Education Center partners including the Educational Opportunities Center, Halifax Educational Foundation, Southside Tobacco Region Scholarship and Telamon Corporation will provide information on financial aid available to cover the cost of attending classes at the SVHEC.
“We are proud to provide Southern Virginians access to a comprehensive and innovative educational environment that compares favorably to – if not exceeds – that available in more urban locales,” said Southern Virginia Higher Education Center Executive Director Dr. Betty Adams. “This is possible because of our team of committed partners and dedicated staff, who are supported by superior technology and facilities. But don’t take my word for it, come see for yourself. Seeing is believing!”
Other open house highlights include technology demonstrations focused on nursing, advanced manufacturing and digital art and design. Open house attendees will see the Center of Nursing Excellence’s simulation manikins in action, and the R&D Center for Advanced Manufacturing & Energy Efficiency will provide an up-close view of what it takes to produce a product in today’s high-tech advanced manufacturing environment.
The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center’s open house is a family friendly event with something available for children and adults. College mascots will make special guest appearances and will be available for photo opportunities.
Light refreshments will be served, and several door prizes including a Google Nexus 7 tablet, $100 Chamber Check, iTunes gift card and gift certificates to local businesses will be given away.
