New gas station pumped up for construction

A Murphy Express gas station/convenience store is in the works for a location on Old Halifax Road across from Walmart.

A site plan and zoning permit have been approved for the 1.112-acre site, located at 3506 Old Halifax Road between Davis Realty and Gas House.

According to preliminary plans, the Murphy Express location will have eight fueling positions that can fuel 16 vehicles at one time, along with a 1,200 square foot convenience store covered by a canopy.

Site preparation for the new Murphy Express began this week.

Michael O’Brien, senior director of Real Estate for Murphy Oil USA, said Tuesday locating in South Boston made sense, both “logically and logistically.”

There are approximately 100 Murphy Express sites in North Carolina, including those in Roxboro, Yanceyville, Eden and Oxford.

His company is beginning to expand its footprint into Southern Virginia, O’Brien added.

The South Boston store is a “very prototypical Murphy Oil project,” he said.

“We’re real excited about the South Boston site coming on line, as well as several other sites planned for Southern Virginia. We no longer are refining petroleum in the U.S., and we have the ability to build and develop our own retail sites,” he said.

No timetable was given for completion of construction at the site.
