Benchmark Community Bank and its holding company, Benchmark Bankshares, have announced the addition of Dr. Alfred A. Roberts to its board of directors. He attended his first meeting on April 17.
Roberts is provost for the Christanna campus of Southside Virginia Community College. He has been with the school since 1995 and has held several different administrative positions there including vice president of Workforce Services and Continuing Education, a position in which he collaborated with economic development agencies in the college’s 10-county service area. He has also served as provost for the Daniel campus. He knows Benchmark’s market area well.
With a Ph.D. in community college leadership from Old Dominion University and certification from the Institute of Educational Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Roberts brings a high level of expertise to the boardroom table.
Deeply involved with key professional and civic organizations, he also brings a good understanding of both Southside Virginia’s potential and the challenges it faces.
He serves on the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia State Committee on Transfer, the board of the Southside Virginia Education Center and on both a council and a committee within the Virginia Community College System. He is also on the board of the Greensville County Boys and Girls Club. His past service includes 24 years on the Greensville County School Board, many of them as chairman.
Among his many accomplishments, Roberts’ curriculum vitae lists numerous awards, honors, and keynote presentations. They include several distinguished service, excellence and leadership awards as well as membership in different honor societies.
A native of Emporia, Roberts resides there with his wife, Janet, who is director of personnel for Greensville County Public Schools. They have three grown children and one grandchild, all currently living out of state. Roberts and his wife are members of the St. Paul Church of God in Christ.
Upon accepting his position on the Benchmark board, Roberts commented, “My long and varied career in public service has made me extremely sensitive to the unique needs of rural southern Virginia. Serving on the Benchmark Community Bank Board provides another vehicle through which I can help the people, businesses and organizations in the area meet those needs.”
Founded in 1971 by a group of local businessmen, Benchmark Community Bank remains locally owned and operated. The $472 million full service bank, headquartered in Kenbridge, serves Southside Virginia with branch offices in Kenbridge, Victoria, Farmville, South Hill, Crewe, Lawrenceville, Clarksville, Chase City, Blackstone, South Boston and Halifax. Its customer base extends into several other adjacent counties. In 2013, the bank was named one of the top 200 community banks in the nation by American Banker magazine for the seventh straight year.
The ratings are based on performance. Additional information about Benchmark can be found at www.bcbonline.com.
