Surrounded by his employees, Ryan Garrett, financial advisor at Edward Jones Company, was presented with the 2014 Business Associate of the Year by Virginia Cumbey, chairman of this Business Women of Halifax County sponsored event.
Members of the Business Women of Halifax County have an opportunity to recommend an associate or their employer as the business associate each year. Garrett was recommended for the award by Diane Greene.
In her letter of nomination, she referenced reasons why Garrett is deserving of this award.
“Ryan believes in giving back to his community by serving and supporting local organizations. He currently serves as chairman of the planning committee for the Halifax Educational Foundation, member of the advisory board of the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region, member of Halifax Forward, and he supports the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center and the Community Arts Center Foundation (The Prizery).
“While Ryan’s accomplishments are many, I think it is his positive attitude and his focus on making a tangible difference in people’s lives that most impresses me. He has encouraged me and other staff members to volunteer for initiatives that we are passionate about, and he has mentored us to expand our view of the world and what is possible, if we have the right attitude. He helps me and many others to stretch beyond what we think is possible, to enjoy what we are doing and to make the most of each and every day,” said Diane Greene.
Garrett was born in Detroit, Michigan, went to school at Warren Wilson College, graduating in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science in social services. He began his career with Edward Jones and a short time later opened the first Edward Jones branch in Virginia right here in South Boston.
He became a limited partner with Edward Jones in 1993 and was named a principal with the firm in 2007. He has served as a regional leader for the last 10 years, helping to mentor, develop and lead as many as 70 Edward Jones branch teams from South Hill to Galax.
Garrett said he was surprised when receiving this award as he thought he was there to present the program for this group.
