This December the 121-year-old classic Christmas fairy tale ballet is coming to Halifax County. We’ve Got Rhythm Dance Academy will perform “The Nutcracker Ballet” Dec. 14-15. The performance will include 29 local dancers as well as three professional dancers and other community members.
“The Nutcracker” preshow includes dances enacted to upbeat Christmas favorites and three Christmas carols sung by local talent Gracie Berneche.
“The Nutcracker” is a two act timeless ballet that tells the account of a family’s Christmas Eve celebration. The original narrative was written by E.T.A Hoffmann and was titled “The Tale of the Hard Nut.” This tale was later adapted by Alexandre Dumas Pere. Pyotr Llyich Tchaikovsky wrote the music. The composer made a selection of eight of the more popular pieces of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s previous work. This fashioned what is currently known as “The Nutcracker Suite.”
“The Nutcracker” was initially choreographed by Marius Petipa, who arranged other ballets to Tchaikovsky’s compositions. “The Nutcracker Ballet” premiered in Russia on Dec. 18, 1892.
We’ve Got Rhythm Dance Academy will present “The Nutcracker” at the Halifax County High School Auditorium Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. Tickets are being sold in advance for $10.
Nutcracker tickets can be purchased at We’ve Got Rhythm Dance Academy or from any of the ballet dancers.
