Little Theatre to hold ‘Elvis’ auditions

Tom Sawyer has wrapped up his stay at The Prizery, so it’s time for the King to move in.

Elvis, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, will be floating around the building in February for Halifax County Little Theatre’s production of “Elvis Has Left the Building.”  Auditions for this comedy will be held at The Prizery next Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 10 and 11, at 7 p.m.

Director Becky Donner is looking for a cast of three men and two women to fill the roles in this Virginia Cate and Duke Ernsberger comedy.  Cate and Ernsberger are the popular mother/son writing team who also wrote “Don’t Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell,” which has been performed widely.

The characters in this new comedy consist of The Colonel, Elvis’s manager, a man in his 50s or 60s; Trudy, the Colonel’s capable German secretary; Roscoe, a nerdish office worker in his 20s to 40s; Candy, a good looking friend of the Colonel’s, a man in his 30s or 40s; and Jill Tanner, an ace newspaper reporter, of any adult age.

Where is Elvis, one may ask?  According to the title, “Elvis Has Left the Building,” which is actually a phrase Elvis’s managers used to use to disperse the crowds after an Elvis performance, to let the autograph and picture seekers know that they might as well go home.  But in this play, The Colonel desperately needs to find Elvis immediately.  So he goes searching for Elvis, or an Elvis impersonator, anyone who can pass himself off believably as The King.

The comedy rolls fast and furious in this two-act comedy, and cast members should have a fun time creating the characters in this play, which is set in Memphis in 1970, a few days before Christmas.

If someone is just interested in being a part of the fun on a production committee or as a back stage worker, Donner would love to have him or her attend auditions also to fill in some contact information.

Get ready to rock and roll as Elvis appears in one form or another in Little Theatre’s winter comedy, set to run Feb. 15 – 23 for six performances.

Tickets to the show could make a nice Christmas gift for someone, and they are already on sale at The Prizery at 572-8339.
