Music students featured at Prizery class

Music teachers Toni Howell, Andrew Liggitt, Bryan and Kevin  Matheson, Tim Duncan and Roberta McCrowell will host a masterclass to highlight the music of J. S. Bach on Saturday, March 31, at 9 a.m. in The Prizery auditorium.

This year’s performances also will feature works by Felix Mendelssohn, a significant force in the revival of Bach’s music during the 19th century.

After Dr. Duncan’s brief introduction and biographical sketches of Bach and Mendelssohn, students will present a variety of choral, vocal, string and keyboard works by the composers.

At noon participants will enjoy Part 2 of the event: “Bach’s Lunch” held in the Parish Hall at Trinity Episcopal Church.  There adult musicians will re-create a concert much like Bach held at Zimmerman’s Coffee-House in Leipzig, Germany, a local eatery where regular concerts were held during Bach’s lifetime.

Prepared lunches can be ordered from Windmill Bakery during the morning session, or participants are welcome to bring their own “box lunch.”

Both events are free and open to the public.
